Physical Therapy | 23 Oct 2024
Back pain is the leading cause of musculoskeletal disability in the American population and a primary reason for visits to the emergency room. Many back-related conditions can cause severe pain and dysfunction. While some cases resolve on their own within three months, adding physical therapy to the treatment plan can aid recovery. Surgery may be necessary when conservative treatments fail to help a patient regain functional independence. Post-surgery physical therapy is critical for helping individuals achieve these goals.
Reasons for Back Surgery
Surgery may be required when pain becomes so severe that it disrupts daily activities or sleep, or when there is severe radiating pain or weakness in the limbs. Other reasons include loss of sensation, impaired balance leading to increased falls, or the inability to perform work duties. In such cases, surgery can help alleviate symptoms and restore function, especially when non-surgical treatments have not provided relief.

Common Types of Back Surgery
Common types of back surgery include spinal fusion, which permanently connects vertebrae, and laminectomy, where part of the vertebrae is removed to reduce pressure on the discs or nerves. Other options include disc replacement, which replaces damaged tissue between vertebrae, and discectomy, a procedure to remove part of a disc pressing on the nerves or spinal cord. These surgeries aim to relieve pain and restore function for patients with severe back issues.
What Is Physical Therapy Like for Back Surgery Patients?
Most patients begin physical therapy within a couple of weeks post-surgery, though some may need to wait 4-6 weeks depending on the complexity of the procedure. Common post-surgical issues like muscle atrophy, weakness, and pain are addressed through a personalized, safe exercise program. This often includes gait retraining, balance improvement, strength-building, and education on how to safely perform daily tasks and work duties.
